A LESSON ON TRUTH

II JOHN

2Jn 1:1 The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;

2Jn 1:2 For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.

2Jn 1:3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

2Jn 1:4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

2Jn 1:5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

2Jn 1:6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

2Jn 1:7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

2Jn 1:8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.

2Jn 1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

2Jn 1:10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

2Jn 1:11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

2Jn 1:12 Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.

2Jn 1:13 The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen.

We pick up today with the the whole letter of II John. He is writing to a lady that he has a great deal of respect for because he regards her "elect" in vs. 1. His letter to her is very similar to that he wrote to the elders and young believers during the whole book of I John.

As we have learned that TRUTH is the foundation for Christian living and John also went as far as to warn this lady that come with associating with false teachers.

An ancient story written of the writer John explains very well of how he handled one false teacher. The writer of this story is Irenaeus, who was a church father and a disciple of Polycarp who in turn was a disciple of the Apostle John.

According to Irenaeus, John once entered a public bathhouse, where he saw Cerinthus, a notable heretic. Immediately, he cried out, "Let us fly, lest even the baht fall on us! Cerinthus, the enemy of truth, is within."

This story reflects John's strong aversion of false doctrine. He loved the truth and faithfully proclaimed it.

VS. 1&2

John addresses himself as elder and when he wrote II John he was more than 90 years old. He also he held a great regard for this lady and her children and was impressed with their testimony for the Lord(vs. 4) He also is warning this lady and her family of false teachers and how to respond or react to them.

John's theme for this book of course is " TRUTH" because he mentions it 5 times and he is stressing that fact once again as the foundation for Christian living. Joh 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. We as believers must stand together for the sake of truth from vs. 2.

In John's greeting of this woman and her family he gives them a typical NT greeting when he stated grace, mercy and peace would be with them. He gives this greeting because of his acquantance with them through their lives built on truth.
