The Pursuit of Greatness
Series: Seek & Save
June 23, 2019
Frank Foreman
We often use abilities, achievements and acumen as the definitive guideline of measuring greatness. However, looking at the Word of God as a whole and the teachings of Jesus specifically, we see that God's measurement involves a different standard altogether. Greatness in the eyes of God is measured in things like humility, child-like innocence, obedience and selflessness. For the Christian, this becomes an imperative for understanding as it runs counter to the mindset and culture of the world.
Episode Notes
Luke 9:46-48, An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by His side and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me. For he who is least among you all is the one who is great.”
BIG IDEA:
Jesus turns our idea of greatness upside down…
Pursue greatness as seen through the eyes of God.
1. True greatness begins in your heart not accomplishments.
Matthew 12:34, You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
2. True greatness seeks opportunities to serve not be served.
John 13:14-15, If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.
3. True greatness places the needs of others before self.
Mark 9:35, And He sat down and called the twelve. And He said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”
