The Full Extent of His Love
Series: COME Follow ... GO Make

Week 9 of the series on discipleship. Over the next three months, we are looking intently at the book of Matthew; specifically we will be focused on the teachings of Jesus directly related to discipleship. As Jesus prepares for the coming crucifixion, He takes time to teach His disciples lessons of service and sacrifice through two important events in the same location. As He washes their feet, He foreshadows the "full extent of His love" that would be displayed, remembered and proclaimed through the bread and cup shared with them in the Passover Meal as he tells them, "This is my Body ... this is My Blood"
Episode Notes
John 13 ... 1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.
2 The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. 13 "You call me ’Teacher’ and ’Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
It would be easy to assume that the “full extent of His love” or the “completion of His love” was seen in washing their feet. Instead, it foreshadows what would be happening over the next several hours and days … how he would reveal to them (and to us) what true unconditional love looks like … how God so loved the world that he gave his only Son.
In doing this, he also reveals the true cost and value of being his disciple. Why is Christ willing to show them the full extent of His love is an important question that can be expressed in a variety of ways but in the end it is a simple answer … there is a price for forgiveness and He was willing to pay it.
Of course, the other question to consider is how He chose to “show them the full extent of His love.” Paul in his letter to the Christians in Rome expresses this equally simple truth:
Romans 5:6-8 … 6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Discipleship—being a fully devoted follower of Christ—means we seek to be a greater reflection of Him in how we think, how we speak, how we act, the choices we make, and even in the way we demonstrate His love to others.
1. A Selfless Demonstration—Matthew 26:20-2520 When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve. 21 And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” 23 He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 25 Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said so.”
- Compassion for one who would betray Him
- Forgiveness for those who would abandon Him
2. A Sacrificial Demonstration—Matthew 26:26-28
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
- His broken body
- His shed blood
3. A Significant Demonstration—Matthew 26:28-29; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.”
1 Corinthians 11:23-26 ... 23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
- The new covenant
- The consistent reminder
- The eternal proclamation
