Matthew 16:13-18, Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in Heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. ---------- This Sunday we continue our new sermon study series, Remember My Chains, from the book of Colossians. This week, the emphasis of the message and worship centers on the Identity of Christ. ---------- Do a causal search online for the "Identity of Christ" and most of what you will discover skips over the identity of Christ and moves immediately to "finding our identity in Christ." While that is an admirable pursuit, it raises that important question. Do we find our identity in Christ, or is it more important to discover His identity and all the Holy Spirit to imprint that identify on us? After all, "It's Not I, but Christ" living in me that should be our ultimate pursuit.
Episode Notes
Matthew 16:13-18, Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in Heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Big Idea: The identity of Jesus is the most important thing.
1. Jesus is the Image of God.
(Journal) Colossians 1:15a, He is the Image of the invisible God…
2. Jesus is the Ruler over all.
(Journal) Colossians 1:15b, …the Firstborn of all creation.
3. Jesus is the Creator of all.
(Journal) Colossians 1:16, For by Him all things were created, in Heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through Him and for Him.
4. Jesus is the Eternal God.
(Journal) Colossians 1:17a, And He is before all things…
5. Jesus is the Sustainer of all.
(Journal) Colossians 1:17b, and in Him all things hold together.
6. Jesus is the Head of the church.
(Journal) Colossians 1:18a, And He is the Head of the body, the church.
7. Jesus is the Risen Lord.
(Journal) Colossians 1:18b, He is the Beginning, the Firstborn from the dead, that in everything He might be preeminent.
8. Jesus is the Fullness of God.
(Journal) Colossians 1:19, For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
9. Jesus is the Reconciler of God and man.
(Journal) Colossians 1:20, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in Heaven, making peace by the blood of His cross.
10. Jesus is the only Savior.
(Journal) Colossians 1:21-23, And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, He has now reconciled in His body of flesh by His death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before Him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the Gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under Heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.
Matthew 7:24-27, Everyone then who hears these words of Mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.
And everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.
Next Step: Acknowledge Jesus as our firm foundation…
Build everything on Him… By hearing and doing what He says.
