Romans 11:33, Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways! ---------- This week, we complete the four-part mini-series over the Judge, Gideon. In this final installment, we see the events surrounding Gideon's later life. It is a lesson about the magnitude of the choices we make. Even a good choice sometimes has a better option that is also available. For Gideon, those choices has broad consequences for his family and his neighbors. ---------- Judges, perhaps more than any other book of the Bible, shows us the failure of humanity to live out God's call on our lives. The book's final words sum up the picture: "In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes." (Judges 21:25)
Episode Notes
Big Idea: Life is full of choices… Sometimes even a good choice has a better way.
1. Choose a gentle answer.
(Journal) Judges 8:1-3
Proverbs 15:1, A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
2. Choose righteous character.
(Journal) Judges 8:4-21
James 1:19-20, Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
3. Choose God only.
(Journal) Judges 8:22-28
Psalm 115:8, Those who make them (idols) become like them; so do all who trust in them.
(Journal) Judges 8:29-35
Next Step: Pray about the legacy that we will leave the next generation… May it be rich, not in stuff, but in a desire to know God.
Romans 11:33-36, Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been His counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to Him that He might be repaid?” For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen.
