Demons & Sinners

Series: The Gospel Can't Be Contained

April 25, 2021
Frank Foreman

This Sunday, Frank concludes the first chapter of Mark in this message, a second look at Jesus' authority. In this week's message His authority is called into question by the religious leaders, mostly because of His popularity with the people as He taught. With a bit of irony, we see that demons He confronted recognized His authority over them while some people questioned His ability to heal and forgive sin. Join us today as we look at the significant impact those truths still have for us as believers today.

Episode Notes

Big Idea: Both the demons and people stood before Jesus as sinners...

Only the demons feared Jesus as their ultimate Judge.

  • The demons were terrified and could not be saved.
  • The people were amazed and would not be saved.

Mark relates the demon’s cry to the authority of Jesus:

1.  The authority of His Word.

(Journal) Mark 1:21-22

Matthew 7:28-29, And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at His teaching, for He was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

Luke 19:48, 19

2.  The authority of His Judgement.

(Journal) Mark 1:23-24

1st John 3:8, Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.

Matthew 8:29, And behold, they cried out, “What have You to do with us, O Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?”

3.  The authority of His Power.

(Journal) Mark 1:25-28

Matthew 9:32-34, As they were going away, behold, a demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to Him. And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.” But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.”

Acts 19:13-16, Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. But the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?” And the man in whom was the evil spirit leaped on them, mastered all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

Next Step:  Respect the authority of Jesus by keeping His commandments.

John 14:15, If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
